Patch management involves the ongoing update of operating system software, especially on servers and network components. These patches are often required to address security threats, but can also include software updates/upgrades or bug fixes.
Patches are installed on the server or device at the client’s location. If this is a network node that is central (i.e. home office vs. branches), it may require a single installation, or if it is distributed there may be equipment in several branches that needs updating. Using remote access, most of these patches can be installed remotely. In some cases, a physical reset or reboot may be required to make the patch effective, especially in the case of an operating system update.
Patches and updates can be released at any time. Depending on the threat level, they may have an immediate implementation need, or patches can be done at schedule routine maintenance points.
